This ArcGIS StoryMap explores the rapidly evolving Arctic region, focusing on the ecological, geopolitical, and environmental transformations driven by climate change and human activity. Designed to accompany a paper written for Environmental Peacebuilding research, the project investigates the Arctic’s growing global significance—from its vital role in regulating climate systems to the rising tensions over territory, resources, and Indigenous rights.

The StoryMap outlines the region’s defining geographical and environmental characteristics, highlighting the critical functions of Arctic ice in reflecting solar radiation, storing freshwater, regulating ocean currents, and serving as a habitat for diverse wildlife and Indigenous cultures. It emphasizes how Arctic warming—occurring at nearly four times the global average—is accelerating permafrost thaw, sea-level rise, biodiversity loss, and extreme weather events.

Using case studies such as melting glaciers, maritime route disputes, and Chinese investment in Arctic development, the project sheds light on emerging challenges and the potential for future conflict over shipping lanes, natural resources, and national boundaries. It also examines cooperative efforts, such as the Arctic Council, and calls for strengthened governance, proactive environmental protections, and equitable policies that consider both Indigenous knowledge and global interdependence.

Ultimately, Arctic Region and Waterways advocates for collaborative and sustainable stewardship of one of Earth’s most fragile—and globally consequential—regions.
